About E. Powell Miller
Powell Miller has been recognized as Michigan’s Number One ranked attorney by Super Lawyers Magazine for 2023 and previously received the Number One ranking in 2020. He is consistently named among the Top 10 lawyers in Michigan; he has been listed in the Top 10 for fifteen consecutive years, from 2009-2023. In 2010, 2015, 2019, 2020 and 2024 he was the recipient of the Best Lawyers – Lawyer of the Year in the category of Bet-The-Company Litigation. Also in 2024 he was the recipient of the Best Lawyers – Lawyer of the Year in the category of Securities Litigation. In 2017, Mr. Miller was the recipient of the Judge Friedman and Cook Civility Award, which is awarded to only one lawyer each year, and in 2024, Mr. Miller was the recipient of the Oakland County Bar Association Professionalism Award.
He has been named as one of the Best Lawyers in America every year since 2005. Mr. Miller focuses his practice on all aspects of litigation. He has been retained by many Fortune 500 and other clients to represent them in litigation throughout the United States, including in Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Kentucky, Ohio, California, Colorado, Indiana, and Illinois.
Representative Matters
Mr. Miller has won numerous high profile jury trials. On the plaintiff side, he achieves multi-million dollar verdicts and, on the defense side, he has never had a verdict against his client. His settlements have achieved more than $6 billion in recoveries. In 2023 alone, he has 6 of the 7 highest class/mass action settlements reported in Michigan Lawyers Weekly. In one example from the list, he was the first to take on the opioid industry in Michigan resulting in an award in excess of $621 million. In arbitrations, he has the highest securities/ wrongful termination arbitral award in Michigan history for Peter Karmanos.
Community Involvement
Mr. Miller has previously served as Co-President of the Detroit Chapter of the Federal Bar Association Antitrust and Securities Committees. He also serves on the Executive Committee for the Wayne State University Law School Board of Visitors and has served a Co-Chair of the American Bar Association Procedures Subcommittee on class actions and multi-district litigation. He lectures regularly on securities litigation at the University of Michigan School of Law and the State Bar of Michigan Business Law Symposium with emphasis on shareholder oppression and trial practice. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Detroit Law School teaching trial practice. In addition, Mr. Miller regularly speaks at continuing legal education seminars on securities fraud class actions. Mr. Miller also serves as a Master member of The Oakland County Bar Association Inns of Court.
Mr. Miller is a proud supporter of the Detroit Urban Debate League, a nonprofit that supports the creation of debate programs in under-served high schools; the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy; The Joe Niekro Foundation, which is committed to aiding in the research and treatment of aneurysm patients and families; Alternative for Girls, humanitarian relief or Ukraine, and Charlotte’s Wings, a nonprofit that is dedicated to supporting ailing children in Southeast Michigan through donations of new books to the children and their families in hospital and hospice care.
